John Carroll University, Bachelor of Science Business Administration, Accounting

Mr. Smolko is in charge of the firm’s Small Business Accounting Services Group. He is experienced in financial statement compilations and reviews, particularly with the retail and service industries.  In dealing with small businesses, he is responsible for various phases of planning, reviewing, documenting, and implementing a client’s accounting systems and internal controls.  He is often involved with client management and their reporting on financial performance using ratios and comparisons of financial data to budgets and expected results.

In addition, Mr. Smolko has participated in and supervised audit engagements for a wide variety of clients including state agencies, credit unions, labor unions, and closely-held companies. He is responsible for the review of client financial statements to monitor their conformance to generally accepted accounting principles and our own firm quality control procedures.

He has also supervised the audits of clients when the Internal Revenue Service, Department of Labor, and various local agencies have examined them.  In coordination with Ciuni & Panichi’s tax department, Mr. Smolko provides both corporate and personal tax planning advice to small business owners, taking into consideration their unique individual tax situations.

His responsibilities also include the review and evaluation of the firm’s staff-level accountants, recruiting efforts for the firm and clients, and the training and administrative direction to motivate, guide, and develop the capabilities of staff personnel.
